    In juni 1823 werd hij doopsgezind proponent. Na een buitenlandse reis beriep de doopsgezinde gemeente te Utrecht hem tot predikant. In december 1823 deed hj daar zijn intrede en bleef daar tot 29 juli 1827. In juni 1827 werd hij tot tweede hoogleraar aan het Doopsgezind Seminarium benoemd. Daarnaast was hij ook, samen met zijn collega Samuël Muller, werkzaam als vierde predikant van de Doopsgezinde gemeente te Amsterdam (duobaan).
