    Zo rond 1908 vertrok Albertus uit Hornhuizen.
    Vermoedelijk waren de levensomstandigheden en vooruitzichten daar toen niet zo goed. Hij ging op goed geluk naar Amerika. Daarbij volgde hij niet de normale emigratieprocedure. Toen hij daar was aangekomen, voorzag hij in zijn levensonderhoud door de meest uiteenlopende banen, Hij woonde eerst in het Westen van Amerika en Canada, maar uiteindelijk vestigde hij zich in Grand Rapids.

    Zijn oom Jaap (Jacob) Pannekoek en diens vrouw Suzanna van Putten woonden al in die plaats. Jaap overleed in Grand Rapids op 31-5-1935. Suzanna van Putten stierf in Grand Rapids op 17 maart 1930.
    Albertus trouwde in 1916 in Grand Rapids met Grietje Modderman uit Leens, Groningen. Grietje werd in Amerika Grace genoemd. In 1912 vertrok zij uit Rotterdam en vervolgens kwam zij via Ellis Island Amerika binnen. Daar ging ze wonen bij haar zussen en zwagers, die al eerder naar Grand Rapids waren geemigreerd.
    In Amerika veranderde Albertus zijn naam in Bert Cook. Die officiele naamsverandering vond plaats in de dertiger jaren, Bert en Grace kregen drie kinderen, waarvan twee de volwassen leeftijd bereikten. Zij droegen ook de naam Cook. Sinds die tijd heeft de familie zich behoorlijk uitgebreid. Albertus overleed op 16 juni 1957, hij werd begraven te Grand Rapids.
