Notes about Lady Diana Skipwith

Born in Prestwold, England to Sir Henry Skipwith Sr. and his lst wife Amy Anne KEMPE Skipwith. Sister to 6. Married Major Edward Dale in 1650 after coming to to America. Sis of Gray Skipwith, Bart. who emigrated to VA, N. America also. Mother of Katherine Dale(Carter) b. 1652 in VA.Diana Skipwith was born at Prestwold. The event, together with her baptism is recorded in the Prestwold Parish Register. There is no record of Diana's marriage to Edward Dale in England, and it is generally accepted that they married in Virginia. Edward Dale's English ancestry is uncertain. Although Diana may have been called 'Lady' as a measure of courtesy in Virginia, she never had any 'official' title. Knighthoods were not hereditary, and their children were 'commoners'. Only the eldest son, or eldest surviving son, of Baronets inherited the title, so Gray Skipwith (Diana's younger brother) did not become Sir Gray, 3rd Baronet, until after the death of his older brother in 1656.
