Em 1929 o país atravessava uma grande crise financeira. O café, que era a sua maior fonte de divisas, so freu uma grande baixa. Nessa época, o Coronel Joaquim de Arruda Campos e sua mulher Gertrudes da Costa Carvalho Arruda, "Tudinha", eram proprietários de uma fazenda de café e gado em Monte Aprazível, na Araraquarense, a.fazenda Bacury que possuía 143 alqueires de terra e 93 mil pés de café.
Com a fazenda em formação e os filhos para educar, seu Arruda confabulou com a mulher e resolveram doar aos filhos as terras que possuíam na alta Sorocabana, no município de Celeste (mais tarde passou a chamar- se Narandiba, Laranjeiras na língua dos índios). A doação foi feita em 1930 e a Fazenda foi chamada de Laranjeiras.

Joaquim de Arruda Campos, o Coronel Arruda, nasceu na cidade de Tietê-SP e faleceu em São José do Rio Preto. Herdou a honradez, o caráter e os costumes se seus pais. Seu pai, fazendeiro e produtor rural, foi um dos maiores propagandistas do abolicionismo em toda região. Como político, destacou-se muito em Monte Alto-SP, sendo eleito por aclamação popular, Vereador da
Câmara Municipal. Em 1925, transferiu sua residência para Rio Preto, residindo na Rua XV de Novembro esquina com a rua Marechal Deodoro. Foi eleito presidente de "A Constructora S/A", com sede à Rua Antônio de Godoy com a rua Tiradentes que, anos seguintes, seria adquirida pelo construtor e serralheiro italiano Constantino Cherubini. No ano seguinte, ajudou a fundar o Partido Democrático, juntamente com o Coronel José Victorino de Sampaio. Foi também pela Direção Central do Partido o primeiro presidente em Rio Preto e membro do Diretório Regional, no 2º Congresso Central do Partido. Com sua larga visão administrativa, tornou-se proprietário de imóveis, capitalista, industrial e fazendeiro. Casado com Gertrudes da Costa Carvalho Arruda, teve 8 filhos. Foi sogro do ex-prefeito Alberto Andaló e do Ministro do Trabalho do Governo João Goulart, João Batista Ramos.
