Depois de formado em advocacia, durante alguns anos exerceu, com excelente desempenho, a carreira. Eleito deputado provincial, salientou-se entre seus colegas, pronunciando admiráveis discursos, sobretudo aqueles que cuidavam do progresso de nossa terra e da defesa de nossa gente. Filiado ao movimento republicano, tudo fez pela defesa da democracia, lutando sempre pelos ideais marcantes e propulsores do civismo. Quando mudou-se para o Rio Grande do Sul, levou consigo os ideais republicanos, ansioso por ver seu país livre do jugo português que, absolutamente, não aceitava. Fundou a Federação, do qual era redator e, por intermédio desse órgão comunicador, lançou suas ideais, influenciando seus leitores.

Foi um verdadeiro patriota, e, sobre ele, refere-se Hiram Ayres Monteiro, em sua obra Venâncio Ayres, o Cavaleiro do Ideal: "Nascido em Itapetininga-SP, aos doze de novembro de 1841, passando pela Faculdade do Recife (1805), onde conheceu Castro Alves.

Formou-se advogado em 1868, pela Faculdade de Direito de São Paulo. Desde pequeno se preocupou com as injustiças sociais, opondo-se veementemente contra os potentados da época. Dedicou sua existência à causa pública, revelando-se incansável defensor dos desvalidos. Abolicionista, promoveu judicialmente a libertação de muitos escravos.

Assumindo a causa republicana, ainda jovem defendeu-a corajosamente como deputado na Assembléia Provincial Paulista (1870/71). Representou Itapetininga na grande Convenção Republicana de Itu, em dezoito de abril de 1873. Com Moreira da Silva, fundou o primeiro jornal de Itapetininga, O Município.

Em 1874, emigrou para o Sul. Com Pinheiro Machado, Júlio de Castilhos, Assis Brasil e outros, desperta o sentimento republicano gaúcho, fundando o Partido Republicano Riograndense, Primeiro redator-chefe da folha republicana, A Federação, fez editar seu primeiro número em janeiro de 1884. Suas teses foram sustentadas por seus discípulos, Júlio de Castilhos, o Patriarca da República, Pinheiro Machado e Ramiro Barcellos.

Sua doutrina foi a base do Castilhismo e do Pinheirismo. O Partido Republicano Riograndense foi o único da União a manter-se fiel às bases doutrinárias de inspiração venanciana, desde os primeiros Congressos, até a queda da República Velha, em 1930. Venâncio Ayres faleceu em Santo Ângelo-RS, em dezesseis de outubro de 1885".
