Jacobus Kornelis Hammingh wordt geboren in 1876, het jaar waarin zijn vader Egbert een nieuw café laat bouwen op de Reitdiepdijk in Garnwerd. 'Koos' verlaat al op zijn veertiende het dorp om in de stad te gaan werken. Aanvankelijk is de jonge Hammingh winkel- en koopmansbediende, maar in 1902 begint hij voor zichzelf als fabrikant.
In een gedeelte van het Corps de Garde aan het Lopende Diep vestigt Koos Hammingh zijn drankenfabriekje 'De Oranjeboom'. Drie jaar later heeft hij al meer ruimte nodig en verhuist z'n bedrijf naar de Turftorenstraat. Volgens het Groninger Adresboek van 1907-'08 is de fabriek dan al weer verkast, nu naar Hoge der A 20. Hammingh blijkt daarnaast nog een pakhuis en een slijterij te hebben. De laatste is tot 1910 gevestigd op het adres Guldenstraat 6, daarna op Vismarkt 9.
Met de aankoop van drie pakhuizen - tegenwoordig samen het Werkmanhuis genoemd - maakt de fabrikant en handelaar in 1912 een grote stap voorwaarts. Hammingh spreekt dan in een reclamebrochure van de 'Eerste Stoom- en Electrische Likeurstokerij, Distilleerderij, Wijnhandel, Advocaat-, Limonade-, Vruchtenwijnen- en sapfabrieken De Oranjeboom'.
De in aanbouw zijnde Schildersbuurt biedt Koos Hammingh de mogelijkheid zijn drankimperium nog verder uit te breiden. Hij verwerft voor die buurt een 'vergunningsrecht voor de verkoop van sterken drank in het klein'. In 1916 vindt hij Meerten Hindriks, die heeft gevaren maar daar genoeg van heeft, bereid op Jozef Israëlsplein een slijterij voor De Oranjeboom te openen.
Twee jaar later koopt Hammingh het fabriekcomplex van vleeswarenproducent Noack aan de Helperwestsingel.
Het verlaten van de pakhuizen aan de Lage der A biedt de distillateur-slijter de mogelijkheid hier andere activiteiten te ontplooien, zoals de vestiging van de mede door hem opgerichte NV Telefoonapparatenfabriek TAFA. In Helpman gaan de zaken aanvankelijk voor de wind. Om verdere uitbreidingen mogelijk te maken heeft Hammingh ook De Oranjeboom omgezet in een 'naamloze vennootschap'.
De slijterij aan het Jozef Israëlsplein is dan al lang zelfstandig. Daardoor wordt deze ook niet meegesleept als het met De Oranjeboom misgaat en op 24 maart 1933 het faillissement wordt uitgesproken. Hoewel Hammingh op 1 juni van dat jaar met zijn zoon Egbert Hendrik opnieuw begint, met een wijnhandel, likeurstokerij en distilleerderij aan de Turfsingel en een al vanaf 1925 bestaande slijterij, wijnhandel aan de Zwanestraat, wordt het nooit meer zoals vroeger.
Nadat Koos Hammingh in december 1951 is overleden, blijft zoon Egbert nog tot '57 een slijterij en groothandel drijven. Opvolger Rutgers noemt zijn slijterij op Zwanestraat 14 nog enige jaren 'Hammingh', maar dan verdwijnt de naam. Hoewel die naam op het Jozef Israëlsplein al veel eerder is verdwenen, is dit wel het enige oude Hammingh-adres waar ook nu na negentig jaar nog steeds drank wordt verkocht.
