Stadhouder, prins van Oranje, graaf van Nassau enz.

Prins Maurits volgde zijn vader, Willem van Oranje, in 1584 op als stadhouder en legeraanvoerder in Holland en Zeeland. Hij werd in 1590 ook stadhouder in Utrecht, Gelderland, Overijssel, Groningen en Drenthe.

Prins Maurits behaalde grote militaire successen in de oorlog tegen Spanje, onder andere in 1600 in de Slag bij Nieuwpoort. Tijdens het Twaalfjarig Bestand raakte hij in conflict met raadpensionaris Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. Deze werd na een politiek proces in 1619 onthoofd. Na het einde van het Twaalfjarig Bestand in 1621 speelde Maurits geen belangrijke militaire rol meer.

Maurits, die ongetrouwd bleef, werd in 1625 opgevolgd door zijn halfbroer, Prins Frederik Hendrik.
