      Hij erfde in 1516 de Duitse bezittingen van zijn vader en verwierf in 1530 ¼ Dietz dat het geslacht Eppenstein bezat (Everhard IV van Eppenstein, broer van Willem's latere schoonmoeder, stierf kinderloos in 1535. Zijn geslacht had deze bezitting verworven door het huwelijk van Judith van Nassau). In 1557 kreeg hij de titel graaf van Katzenelnbogen en nog ¼ Dietz, indertijd door de Eppenstein's aan Katzenelnbogen verkocht. Op 9 okt. 1528 hechtte de keizer zijn goedkeuring aan zijn benoeming tot gouverneur van Luxemburg, doch Willem weigerde. Hij werd Lutheraan en in 1535 lid van de Schmalkaldische bond.
