De Gestapo heeft tijdens de oorlog op vraag van Leopold III een huiszoeking uitgevoerd bij sterpianist Walter Rummel. De Duitse geheime politie was tevergeefs op zoek naar de liefdesbrieven van de koning aan Rummels vrouw Francesca. Historicus Evrard Raskin heeft een van die brieven nu in zijn bezit.

Leopold III had tal van minnaressen. Een van hen was Francesca Rummel, die met goedkeuring van haar man een affaire met de koning begon. Een van de brieven die hij Francesca schreef, is nu opgedoken. Die werd op 21 augustus 1937 geschreven, nog geentwee jaar na het overlijden van koningin Astrid.

"Ik hoop je zo snel mogelijk in een dirndl te zien, met de zon en de maan flink gezwollen", staat in een van de brieven te lezen. Dat laat historicus Evrard Raskin aan een krant van Corelio weten.

De koning maakte zich in 1941, toen hij met prinses Lilian zou trouwen, zorgen over de andere liefdesbrieven die hij Francesca Rummel zond. Hij vroeg het hoofd van de Gestapo in Belgie, Constantin Canaris, een huiszoeking bij het gezin Rummel uit tevoeren om de brieven te recupereren. Die vond echter niets.

Het is niet zeker wanneer hun affaire eindigde. Begin 1939 was er alvast Liselotte Landbeck en vanaf 1941 was hij getrouwd met Lilian. De koning had wellicht nog vriendinnen. Er is ook sprake van minstens een buitenechtelijke dochter en zoon.
