Notes about LEONARDUS JOHANNES SMIT

In het Ochtendblad van het N.R.C. van 21 november 1926, herdacht Ir. P.A. van Sandick de overleden heer L.J. Smit als volgt.
"Zijn opleiding in het Scheepsmakersvak werd voltooid door verblijf op verschillende werven in het buitenland, waarna hij bij zijn vader Jan Smit V in de zaak: "De firma L.Smit & Zn." werd opgenomen.
In 1897 trok zijn vader zich uit de firma terug, zodat de zoon toen enig firmant werd en nadat de firma op 3 januari 1920 omgezet was in een Naamloze Vennootschap, President-Directeur. Onder zijn leiding werd het bedrijf zeer uitgebreid en kreeg het vooral naam door het bouwen van de eerste zichzelf leegzuigende hopperzandzuigers, volgens haar patent.
L.J. Smit was een eenvoudig man, die zelden op de voorgrond trad, doch velen van zijn werkgevers hadden in hem het grootste vertrouwen; zij waren niet alleen zeker eerste klas werk te verkrijgen, doch waren ook overtuigd, dat elk contract werd uitgevoerd, niet slechts naar de letter, doch ook naar de geest; wat oorzaak was, dat somtijds grote bestellingen alleen met een simpele brief werden bevestigd.
Hij was bestuurslid van verschillende bekende ondernemingen, o.a. de Kon. Mij. "De Schelde", te Vlissingen, de Electro-Industrie te Slikkerveer, L. Smit & Co., Sleepdienst te Rotterdam, de Nederlandsche Stoomboot Reederij te Rotterdam, de Eerste Nederlandsche Scheepsverband Mij. te Dordrecht (later te Rotterdam).
Hij was Ambachtsheer van Nieuw-Lekkerland; de Nederlandse regering erkende zijn verdiensten door hem te benoemen tot Officier in de Orde van Oranje Nassau, en de Belgische regering door een benoeming tot Officier in de Kroonorde van België."
