3rd December 1863 Enrolled in the Hampshire Militia served 2 years 3 months & 20 days.
23 March 1866 Released from his Militia engagement on enlistment in the regular army for a bounty of £1 and a free kit
24th March 1866 Declared fit for service in the 12th Brigade of the Royal Artillery. Described as 5 feet 8 ¾, fresh complexion, grey eyes, dark brown hair, chest circumference 36 in, weight 150 lbs., muscular development good.
In first 5 months of service he was treated for syphilis and gonorrhoea twice but he
seems to have learned his lesson because those problems didn’t recur after this.
1866 – 70 Served in Gosport and in Jersey, where he met and married Ann Susan La Niece.
1869 Tried and imprisoned for 7 weeks 31 May to 19 July in Jersey?
1870 30 June to 6 July in the Garrison cells
1st July 1870 Transferred to Portsmouth
18th April 1871 Vaccinated in Pembroke
6th Oct 1873 Embarked for Malta
9th April 1882 Transferred to 6/1 Scottish Division, R.A.
31st Aug 1882 Went to Egypt. Awarded Egyptian medal and Khedive’s Bronze Star
14th Dec 1882 Returned to Malta
27th June 1883 Transferred to Regimental District staff, Woolwich because of chronic rheumatism
23rd August 1889 Discharged to pension
