Notes about Willem Ii Van Gulik

Sinds 1343 was Willem mederegent van zijn vader, maar hij voerde veel strijd met hem en zette hem zelfs gevangen in 1349-1351. Jarenlang trachtte hij in Holland en Zeeland zijn aanspraken tegen de Wittelsbacher hard te maken, maar mislukte.

In 1361 volgde hij dan zijn vader op als tweede hertog van Gulik. Tijdens diverse gevechten verloor hij o.m. Kaiserswerth en Zülpich, maar won Monschau (Montjoie), Randerath en Linnich. In de Gelderse broederstrijd koos hij partij voor hertog Eduardvan Gelre en maakte in 1371 de Slag bij Baesweiler mee. Hij nam hertog Wenceslaus van Luxemburg-Brabant gevangen en verzekerde tenslotte de erfopvolging voor zijn zoon in Gelre als tegenprestatie voor de vrijlating van Wenceslaus.

Hij verkocht in 1358 Zichem aan Reinier I van Schoonvorst voor 70.000 goudmunten.
