Op 25-jarige leeftijd besteeg hij de troon. Hij was echter besluiteloos, en volgde de beslissingen van anderen. Eerst van Pierre de la Broce, en later van Karel I van Napels.

In 1285, het laatste jaar van zijn koningschap, trachtte Filips zonder succes het koninkrijk Aragón te annexeren. In de nasleep van deze strijd stierf Filips III op 5 oktober bij Perpignan in Roussillon, het hedendaagse departement Pyrénées-Orientales. Hij is samen met zijn vrouw, Isabella van Aragón (1247 - 1271) begraven in de Saint-Denis-basiliek.
