Marlène de Grauw schrijft over haar vader op 22 feb 06:
Na de dood van zijn moeder ging mijn vader Mattheus samen met zijn broer Antoine en zijn vader Antoine in het "oudemannenhuis" van de zusters van St. Jacob in Dordrecht wonen. Zijn broer Jan ging naar Jo Martens, een ongetrouwde onderwijzeres, die bij haar ouders in Zeeland woonde. Antoine ging met mijn vader in een kosthuis wonen en mijn vader bleef nog bij de zusters. Antoine en mijn vader hebben ook nog een half jaar in een internaat in Heel (L) gezeten, maar dat bleek een instelling voor zwakbegaafden, dus daar werden ze toen hun vader dat ontdekte afgehaald. Mijn vader werd toen in een pleeggezin in Dordrecht geplaatst en toen hij een jaar of 10 was ging hij naar het gezin, waar zijn zus Annie (zr Josepha) inwonende huishoudelijke hulp was in Rijsenburg. Rond zijn 12e werd hij overgeplaatst naar het Leogesticht (de Leo-stichting?) in Borculo. Daar is hij opgeleid tot huisschilder. Vervolgens woonde hij in Groesbeek, Gent (?), Breda, Rotterdam en Heerlen. Van juli 1943 tot mei 1945 is hij tewerkgesteld in Aken voor de Arbeitseinsatz. Na de oorlog woonde hij weer in Rotterdam. Vlak voor het trouwen in 1954 verhuisde hij naar Geleen en daar heeft hij tot zijn dood gewoond.
