Several related Boswell families lived in Bladen County, NorthCarolina from the 1700's through today. In 1808, the State of North Carolina created Columbus County from parts of Bladen and Brunswick Counties. The Boswell's, without moving, then lived in Columbus Co., which is why, after 1808, theydisappear from the census in Bladen Co. and appear in the Columbus Co. censuses. Columbus County is in the Southeastern part of North Carolina, due East of Wilmington and near the South Carolina border. The County Seat is Whiteville, on Hwy 76 between Wilmington, NC and Florence, SC.
The first Boswell to migrate from NC to Pike County was probably Stephen Boswell (1830 census, Pike Co.). Stephen was the son of Thomas Boswell, grandson of Henry, nephew of David Boswell, and Matthew's first cousin.
He built a house near what came to be called Boswell's Crossroads in what was then Pike County. As in NC, he changed County residences without moving, when in 1866 Bullock County was created from parts of Pike, Montgomery, and Henry Counties. The Boswell's then appear in the Bullock County census, where many stayed for years. Some, including Matthew, moved the short distance into Pike Co.
The U.S. census, 1840, Columbus County,North Carolina, shows Matthew Boswell as having 1 male age 10-15 (Sanburn?), 1male age 40-50 (himself), 1 female 5-10 (Malinda), and 1 female age 20-30 (wife, Camille, last name unknown)who he married in about 1827.
He joined his cousins in Pike Co. between 1845-1850 with his sons Sanburn and Morris, daughter Malinda, and young son Martin V. who was born just after the 1840 census, probablyin 1841/42, probably in Columbus Co., NC. Matthew built a house near Boswell'sCrossroads and began farming. The 1850 Pike Co. census lists: Matthew, 55, farmer, born NC, (no wife listed) son Sanborn, 21 b. NC, farmer; daughter Malinda 15, b. NC; son Morris 12, b. NC; and son Martin 9, b. NC. There are age discrepancies in these census listings; Martin was probably born in 1841 or 1842 and was 8 or 9 years old, or his birth was in 1845 and he was only 5.
In the Slave Scedule, Pike Co., 1850, Matthew owned no slaves but his cousin John Boswellowned 27 slaves and Martha Boswell (probably the widow of another first cousin) owned 13.
Matthew is probably buried in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Bullock County. The Boswell's were then Methodists, and John Boswell (son ofThomas, grandson of Henry, uncle to Matthew), a Methodist Minister, served aspresiding elder of the Clayton, Line Creek Mission and Catoma Colored Missions.John is buried in Salem Cemetery in Pike Co. A biography of John is includedin his notes.
