EARLDOM OF OXFORD (XIII) 1462 to 1475 -- 1485
JOHN DE VERE, EARL OF OXFORD, 2nd but 1st surviving son and heir, wasborn 8 September 1442. He was allowed to succeed his father, and on 18January 1463/4 he had licence to enter on all the castles, &c., which hisfather held. In May 1465 he was created K.B. at the Coronation ofElizabeth Wydeville, whereat he officiated both as Great Chamberlain ofEngland (in the absence of Warwick, who held that office) and asChamberlain to the Queen Consort. In November 1468 he was committed tothe Tower, on suspicion of plotting with the Lancastrians against theKlng; but he received a general pardon 5 April 1469. He then joined thediscontented Yorkists led by (his brother,in-law) the Kingmaker and theDuke-of Clarence, and like them he fled overseas in the following year.They returned in September and restored Henry VL He was appointedConstable of England, and as such, on 15 October, he tried and condemnedthe Earl of Worcester, who had condemned his father and brother. In March1470/1 he commanded in Norfolk in such force that Edward IV was unable toland therc. At the battle of Barnet he commanded the left wing. He fledto Scotland, thence to France, where he collected ships and took toprivateering. On 28 May 1473 he made an unsuccessful landing in Essex. On30 September he seized St. Michael's Mount, Cornwall, where he wasbesieged for some months, but was compelled to surrender. He wasimprisoned in the castle of Hammes, near Calais, and was attainted earlyin 1475. In 1485 he escaped from Hammes, joined the Earl of Richmond atAngers, and commanded the archers at Bosworth. His attainder wasrepealed, and he was appointed Lord High Admiral of England, Ireland andAquitaine, High Steward of the Duchy of Lancaster south of Trent, andConstable of the Tower of London and of Rising Castle, and received manyother grants. P.C. and K.G. He was recognised as Hereditary Lord GreatChamberlain of England, and officiated as such at the Coronations ofHenry VII and Elizabeth of York, at both of which he was also one of theCommissioners for executing the office of Lord High Steward. In September1486 he was godfather to Prince Arthur. He led the van at the battle ofStoke in 1487, and in Picardy in 1492. In 1496 he was one of theguarantors of the treaty with Burgundy. In June 1497 he was one of thecommanders against the Cornish rebels at Blackheath. He was appointedLord High Steward of England for the trial of the Earl of Warwick,November 1499. On the accession of Henry VIII he continued in highfavour, and he officiated as Lord Great Chamberlain of England at hisCoronation.
He married, 1stly, Margaret, sister of Richard (NEVILLE), EARL OF WARWICKAND SALISBURY, and daughter of Richard (NEVILLE), EARL OF SALISBURY, byAlice, daughter of Thomas (MONTAGU), 4th EARL OF SALISBURY. She diedafter 20 November 1506, and was buried at Colne Priory. He married,2ndly, between 28 November 1508 and 10 April 1509, Elizabeth, widow ofWilliam, 2nd VISCOUNT BEAUMONT, and daughter and coheir of Sir RichardSCROPE (2nd son of Henry, 4th LORD SCROPE of Bolton), by Eleanor,daughter of Norman WASHBOURNE. He died s.p.s., probably s.p., 10 March1512/3, at Hedingham Castle, and was buried 24 April, at Colne Priory.The Countess survived him, and was in favour at Court.
