Until 1095, Portugal had no seprate history from the rest of the Iberian peninsula. In that year Alfonso VI, King of Castile, gave the countr to Henry of Burgundy with the hand of his natural daughter Theresa, whose mother was one Ximena Nunes. henry was a grandson of Robert, duke of Burgundy, and this a scion of the Capetian Royal House of France.

He was a typical warrior of the time and left his capable wife in charge of their country whilehe journeyed to Palestine o take part in the Second Crusade from 1103 to 1105. Theresa as we are told was not only an extremely able administrator, but also beautiful, passionate and a patroness of poetry and music.
