Patrick de Dunbar, 6th Earl of Dunbar; member of a pro-English groupamong the Scots nobility, as which managed to get the boy King AlexanderIII away from the dominance of the Comyn family, becoming in consequence1255 Regent of Scotland and Guardian to Alexander and his young consort(dau of Henry III of England); commanded a division of the Scottish armyin the victory over Norsemen at Largs 1263. EARLDOM OF DUNBAR (VI)

PATRICK (DE DUNBAR), EARL OF DUNBAR [SCT], son and heir, aged 35 whenserved heir to his father's lands in England, 13 December 1248. He wasone of the English faction in 1255, in which year he rescued AlexanderIII from the power of the Comyn family, and was nominated in September1255, REGENT [SCT] and Guardian of the King and Queen. He held a commandagainst the Norwegians, at Largs, in 1263; was a signatory to the treaty,6 July 1266, for the cession of the Hebrides and the Isle of Man toScotland; as also to the marriage contract of Margaret of Scotland withEric of Norway, 25 July 1281; and again in February 1283/4, to thesuccession of the "Maid of Norway" to the throne of Scotland.

He married, 1242, Cecil [a], daughter of John. He died at Whittingham, 24August 1289, aged 76, and was buried at Dunbar. [Complete PeerageIV:506, XIV:283, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

She is conjectured to have been an heiress of the familyof Fraser, in consequence of which alliance this Earl (4 Nov. 1261) bore(being the first of his race who did so) the roses of the house of Fraserin a bordure round the lion rampant of Dunbar. Christian Bruce (sister ofRobert Bruce, the competitor, 1291-92, for the throne of Scotland) is thewife assigned to him in Wood's 'Douglas', but erroneously. (ex inform. A.H. Dunbar).
