Caus Castle, Shropshire: An 11th century motte castle covering an area of about 2.4 hectares (6 acres). Caus received a shell enclosure on the motte in the following century, as well as a rectangular curtain round the inner bailey. The curtain had cylindrical towers on each of the corners. The stonework was protected by extensive earthworks, which included double ditching. The castle was demolished during the Civil War and there are very few remains still visible today.
