Notes about Lonnie G. Carlton Callahan

536. LONNIE CARLTON6 CALLAHAN (JOHN HENRY5, ALFRED BURTON4, ROBERT SIDNEY3, HENRY2, JOHN1) was born 20 Aug 1878 in Rutherford Co. NC, and died 12 Feb 1959 in Buncombe Co. NC. He married MARY LELA GRAYSON 16 Mar 1910 in Rutherford Co. NC, daughter of WILLIAM GRAYSON and JULIA MELTON. She was born 31 Jul 1885 in Rutherford Co. NC, and died 25 May 1964.

Notes for LONNIE CARLTON CALLAHAN:
Lonnie Callahan was the only male child of John Henry Callahan and Maggie Geer to survive to be married. In July of 1898, he joined the US Army as a member of Co. B, 2nd NC Regiment and left to fight in the Spanish-American War. According to his military records, however, Lonnie became ill while in training and was not sent to Cuba. By the time he recovered from his illness, the war was over and Lonnie was mustered out of service in November 1898.
Lonnie's WWI Draft Registration record stated that he was a carpenter employed by Goode & Co., Asheville, NC. He was described as tall, medium build, with gray eyes & gray hair.
In 1913, Lonnie and his wife, Lela, were deeded the rights to his family home for the sum of $1 on the condition that he care for his mother. Lonnie kept the property until after his mother died and sold it in 1918. In 1920, Lonnie and his family were living next to his in-laws in Bostic, Rutherford Co. NC. Like many other members of the Callahan family, Lonnie was a carpenter. In 1922, he travelled to Columbus, Georgia to help in construction of a bridge across the Chattahoochee River into Alabama. While working on this bridge, Lonnie fell 94' into 6' of water, breaking both his legs and his back. As a result of this accident, Lonnie was disabled for the remainder of his life. Before he was disabled, Lonnie stood 6'4" tall, but afterwards, he walked stooped with a cane.
Because of his disability, Lonnie could not work, but in 1923, he purchased a lot in a new "subdivision" in Rutherfordton near present Meridian St. and had a house built. By 1928, however, he was having difficulty paying the taxes on the property and with the coming of the Depression, he lost his home and property. During and after the Depression, the family, and later only Lonnie and Lela, lived with relatives and in a series of rental properties. Despite his hardships, however, Lonnie never lost his kindheartedness nor his desire to be a productive member of society. His "workshop" always overflowed with "useless junk" being fashioned into "useful" items. Like the furniture he built before he was disabled, many of these items are still in the possession of family members and are still being used today.
Lonnie died at the Veteran's Hospital in Oteen, Buncombe County, NC in 1959 and he was buried at Rutherfordton City Cemetery during a driving snow storm.

Notes for MARY LELA GRAYSON:
Lela Grayson's sister, Blanche Grayson, married Lonnie Callahan's first cousin, Alfred Samuel Callahan.
