Note from William S. Hardee:
John Gore Sr. was a Colonel. He and his three wives are buried in Pireway, NC.
Information from Beulah Holly Henderson from her book on the HOLLY and Graham families.
John Gore married three times and had a total of twenty five children.
Other wives were Susan Jane Gore, his first cousin by his Uncle James.
The last wife was Elizabeth Stevens.
Many of his children were part of the mass migration from the Columbus,
Brunswick and Horry County areas of NC and SC.
There is a family bible in posession of Minus Meares of Tabor City NC on
the Gore family.

John Gore Sr, is buried in the Lay Cemetery, in Horry County, South Carolina.
In the 1870 Columbus County, census of Bug Hill Township, Page # 2, John Gore, is listed as head of household 10, (no wife) Living with him is his son in law William J. Leigh (Lay), and his wife Victoria, John and William are listed as farmers. (WSH)

Colonel Gore represented Columbus County in the NC State Legislature in 1815. He was later a JP and a road commissioner. He married three times and had 25 children. The wives of Col. John Gore are listed in his father's bible. He served as a Colonel in the Militia.

!MARRIAGE, OCCUPATION: The Descendants of Joshua Gore by B. Otis Prince, The Columbus Co. Library, Whiteville NC. "...a man of character and means. He was much interested in the politics of his day and was active in all Civic affairs. His home was near what is now Pireway, N. C., and is reputed to have been one of the finest homes in that section." "I remember my father talking about Colonel John Gore, and how he tried to build a city out of Pireway. He worked hard to get a railroad to come into that area. There used to be a lot of stores and bar rooms all around the area. Turpentine stills and coopers shops were where Mrs. Lester Gore's house is now and the old pits are still noticeable." First quote by B. Otis Prince; by Mr. Anderson.

From B. Otis Prince: "He, with his brother-in-law Thomas Frink,* was on the committee for forming the dividing line between Brunswick Counties and Columbus during the early years of 1809-10. He later served in the House of Representatives [of NC], was road commissioner, Justice of the Peace and very civic minded. He owned in excess of seven thousand acres of land in the Seven Creeks area, Pireway and along the North Carolina South Carolina line. It was with this beginning that his Son, John "Squire" Gore began building a vast fortune.
"A small town, named Pireway, which still exist in North Carolina is much to the credit of Colonel Gore, who tried to develop it into a prosperous city. It was much like the old western cities, with several stores, and bar rooms. Pireway was the center of a large Turpentine business. Cornelious Thomas was
active in this area with this industry. Several of the old timers speak of the old turpentine stills that used to be near the home of Mrs. Lester Gore, and how an old coopers shop was built in what is now her side yard. Those who are curious may still see the pits in which to turpentine pit is solid.
"Colonel Gore was endeared by those of the community who knew him and it is said that none came to his door hungry and left without food or lodging if they desired it."

*Unless Otis Prince was wrong he had a 4th wife, a Frink Lady.

!RESIDENCE: Lived near Molly section NC until 1821, moved near Pireway, Brunswick (now Columbus) NC. Was living in Pireway in 1835 when his father-in-law died at his home.

!LAND: Received by his father's will 250 acres on Beaverdam Swamp, 342 acres of the Lower part of the Daniel Gore land on Gum Swamp, Columbus Co; also land lying in Columbus to be divided between John & William. Also, according to Recollections & Records of Columbus Co NC p286, he was a large landowner and a merchant. "In his time Pireway had stores, barrooms, turpentine stills and coopers shops."
