    Nach dem frühen Tod ihres Mannes musste sie für sich und ihre noch sehr jungen Töchter den Lebensunterhalt bestreiten. Wie aus dem Testament ihrer Schwiegermutter zu entnehmen ist, hatte ihr erster Ehemann wohl nur Schulden hinterlassen.

    Aus dem Jahre 1912 existiert eine in Speldorf abgestempelte Postkarte, die Laura an ihren Bruder Walter geschrieben hat. Er war Kanonier im 4. Btl. Garde - Fuß - Artillerie - Rgt. in Spandau. Die Karte zeigt die sehr schöne Schrift von Laura. Auf der Vorderseite ist ein Backsteinhaus abgebildet. Davor stehen Laura mit einer Tochter auf dem Arm, ihrem Ehemann und weitere Personen, die nicht mehr zugeordnet werden können.

    Maria Behmenburg, die jüngere Schwester von Laura, hatte einen selbständigen Metzger geheiratet. Er machte es möglich, dass Laura nach dem Tod ihres ersten Mannes eine Filiale seiner Metzgerei leitete. Dadurch konnte sie sich und ihre Töchter "über die Runden" bringen.

    Mit ihrem zweiten Mann baute sie um 1923/24 in Duissern, In der Ruhrau 39, ein Reihenhaus, das als ein Projekt des VdK für kriegsversehrte Soldaten durchgeführt wurde.

    Im Zweiten Weltkrieg ist sie bei einem Fliegeralarm auf dem Weg in den Luftschutzkeller auf der Treppe gestürzt. Dabei hat sie sich ein Hüftleiden zugezogen das in späteren Jahren dazu führte, dass das rechte Bein von der Hüfte an in ein Korsett aus Leder mit Stahlstützen geschnürt werden musste. Trotzdem konnte sie nur unter ständigen Schmerzen laufen. Sie ging immer an einem Stock.

    Oma Laura war eine kleine, rundliche Person. Ich kenne sie nur mit schneeweißen Haaren, die sie um eine Glatze in Form einer Tonsur sorgfältig toupierte und dann mit einem hauchfeinen Haarnetz sicherte. Oma war äußerst resolut, war sie böse oder wollte sie ihren Willen durchsetzten konnten ihre blauen Augen "Blitze aussenden".
