    Geschiedenis:
    Naar het stadsgedeelte "Achter de Horssteeg" (14 augustus 1889 oud-Enschede). Bij besluit van 1 september 1898 is hiervoor de naam "Emmastraat" vastgesteld;
    bij besluit van 4 juni 1903 is het gedeelte van de Zwedeweg tot de grens bij de Denneweg "2e Emmastraat" genoemd.

    Wilhelm Ludwig is gedoopt door Nicolaas de Jonge en dominee uit Lexmaond en later beroepen naar Brussel.

    Pokkenepidemie

    Onuitwisbare indruk heeft Ds. De Jonge gemaakt door zijn optreden tijdens de pokkenepidemie in de zomer van 1871. Zonder aan zichzelf te denken, was hij dag aan dag aan de ziekbedden, die vaak ook sterfbedden waren, te vinden en bood hulp en verpleging waar hij maar kon. De Jonge heeft deze tijd, zo wordt vermeld, nooit vergeten en Lexmond hem niet. Hij wist, zo wordt aangereikt, zo beslag te leggen op zijn gemeente, dat Lexmond een echte geestelijke opleving kende. Tot op de dag van vandaag wordt deze periode, zo schrijft Ds. Wursten, in Lexmond dan ook wel het “Lexmondse reveil” genoemd. Na een tamelijk liberaalvrijzinnige periode breekt in Lexmond met Dominee De Jonge een periode aan van verdieping van het geloofsleven in de gemeente, die nog heeft doorgewerkt tot in het begin van de vorige eeuw.

    Legendevorming

    In de ‘legendevorming’ rond Ds. De Jonge wordt de vrijzinnigheid in Lexmond voor de komst van deze predikant stevig aangedikt en wordt vaak voorgesteld dat het kerkelijk leven in Lexmond op sterven na dood was. Maar uit notulen van de kerkenraad uit die periode blijkt dat dit aanzienlijk genuanceerder ligt. Dit is ook terug te vinden in de uittreksels in het boekje van wijlen J. van Dieren. De rechtzinnige koers die sinds Ds. De Jonge in Lexmond gevaren werd, gecombineerd met een levend geloofsleven heeft, aldus het schrijven van Ds. Wursten, de ‘verliezen’ tijdens de doleantie beperkt gehouden. Zowel kerkenraad als predikant stonden recht in de leer en stevig in de schoenen.

    Groter arbeidsveld

    In april 1874 kreeg deze ijverige en begaafde predikant twee beroepen, namelijk naar Enschede en Brussel. De gemeente was zeer bezorgd over het aannemen. Er was veel gebed dat deze geliefde predikant nog enige tijd zou blijven. Dat deze prediker naar een groter arbeidsveld zou uitzien was te voorzien, maar het kwam als een volkomen verrassing dat Dominee De Jonge op 10 april 1874 aan de kerkenraad meedeelde dat hij niet het beroep van Enschede, waarvoor men vreesde, maar het beroep naar Belgie, namelijk naar het ‘Roomsche Brussel’ had aangenomen. Op 26 april van dat jaar hield hij zijn afscheidspreek.

    In 1882 geeft dominee De Jonge zijn predikantschap van de kerk van Brussel op en wijdt hij zich volledig aan de aansturing van het evangelisatiewerk. Dit leidt tot een grote opleving in het Belgische protestantisme. Tussen 1883 en 1926 groeien in tenminste zeven plaatsen de daar opgezette evangelisatieposten uit tot gemeenten die nu nog bestaan.

    Daarnaast worden mede door toedoen van Ds. De Jonge Christelijke scholen opgericht, een bejaardentehuis en een ziekenhuis. Vanuit de eigen drukkerij worden bovendien veel pamfletten verspreid en twee periodieken (De Stem en Blijde Boodschap voor Vlaanderen en Nederland). Dominee De Jonge wordt verteerd, ook letterlijk, door de ijver voor de Heer der Heerscharen. Hij overlijdt op 24 januari 1898 op 52-jarige leeftijd in Utrecht.
