Hij was hoogleraar te Franeker,benoemd op 27-1-1585.


Volgens NL 1886-44 en Navorscher IV-373 waren Petreus en zijn broer Dominicus zonen van Tjaert Hanckes en Lisck Doeckes, maar volgens GJB 1984-26 kunnen daar vraagtekens bij worden gezet.


Hij blijkt ook hoogleraar te zijn geweest aan de universiteit van Leiden, gesticht 8-2-1575.
