Hij was lid van de Ridderschap van Drenthe en hoofdeling van Peize en Westernieland en speelde een belangrijke rol in de eerste jaren van den 80-jarigen oorlog. Hij moest na het verrraad van Rennenberg op 18-06-1580 vluchten naar Oost-Friesland.
Ten tijde van de Spaanse opstand vertrok Joost uit Peize. Hij verzoende zich in 1582 weer met de Spanjaarden.

Hij is getrouwd 31-05-1538 met Elisabeth Jurjens ADDINGA (van WESTERWOLDE en ZANDEWEER), geboren Zandeweer ca. 1521, overleden 1594, dochter van Jurgen Haijes ADDINGA en Anna THEDEMA.
