Jan van Die begint als metselaar en leert in de avonduren verder. Hij doet in Indië examen en mag zich dan Enginer of Works (praktijkingenieur) noemen. Hij werkt later als opzichter 1e klasse bij de Provinciale Waterstaat in Zuid-Holland en bouwt o.a. hefbruggen in Gouwe. Het echtpaar vertrekt na hun huwelijk naar Indië. In juni 1927 komen zij weer terug met de Paria van de Rotterdamse Lloyd. Jan van Die heeft een bedankbrief van Prins Bernard gekregen voor zijn werk in het verzet in de tweede wereldoorlog.
