Gertie DeVries, of Lynden, went to be with her Lord on Friday, April 20, at the age of 93. Gertie was born in Shepherd, Montana on February 2, 1914 and was the daughter of Ike and Winnie (Tolsma) Groen.
She grew up in Shepherd and married Louis DeVries before moving to the Lynden area in 1944. Together they operated a dairy farm on the East Badger Road where they raised their family. Following Louis'death in 1978, Gertie continued farming until 1983,.
when she moved into Lynden.
A homemaker, Mrs. DeVries was a member of the Third Christian Reformed Church in Lynden. She was active in ladies groups, Bible Study Fellowship and volunteering at Lynden Christian School fund raising programs. Gertie made numerous oil paintings and enjoyed horseback riding, knitting, crocheting, gardening and traveling, but especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Gertie is survived by her children Jim (Beryl) DeVries of Everson, Janet (Dale) Holt of Lynden, Barbara (Chuck) Tjoelker of Blaine, Rob (Louise) DeVries of Everson, Wayne (Barb) DeVries of Ferndale and Karen (Mike) Lindeen of Anchorage, Alaska; twenty-four grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Johnny Kinghorn in Montana and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. DeVries was preceded in death by a son Daryl DeVries, three grandchildren Linda, Krystal and Jessica, sisters Nellie DeVries and Susie Molendyk and brothers Joe, Aize, John and Fred Groen.
