Notes about Gerrit VAN DER BEEK

Dit was mijn opa. Ik heb goede herinneringen aan hem. Hij heeft geen gemakkelijk leven gehad. Als kind van 4 verliest hij zijn moeder die overlijdt in het kraambed na de geboorte van zijn broer Jo(hannes). Zijn vader overlijdt het jaar daarop aan longontsteking.
Opa komt na het overlijden van zijn vader in huis bij Hugo BEL te Eethen. Hij blijft daar tot 1909. In 1909 (hij zal toen in de puberteit zijn geweest, zien we aan de uitgaven van de diakonie dat hij in 1 jaar 4 kosthuizen heeft. Hugo Bel krijgt f 4,50; C. van Kuijk f 1,- ; Jan Colijn f 10,- en Jan van Berkel f 52,- .
Cornelis van der Beek (de broer van vader Antony) was voogd en Paulus van der Zouwen, getrouwd met tante Francien Ouwerkerk, toeziend voogd over opa. (Oom Wim, de broer van opa, woonde bij tante Francien in huis). Cornelis geeft toestemming tot plaatsing in Neerbosch. Opa wordt op dinsdag 1 februari 1910 door burgemeester Oerlemans (van Drongelen) naar Neerbosch gebracht en hij vertrekt op 2-2-1914 naar Dussen waar hij gaat wonen bij D.C. Koekkoek, landbouwer in Wijk B. Daar blijft hij niet al te lang, hij vertrekt naar Arkel (waarschijnlijk bij de fam. Gijsbert Van der Leeden-Johanna Florida Bel, dochter van vroegere pleegvader Hugo Bel) Op 12-11-1915 gaat hij echter wonen bij oom Cornelis van der Beek in Dussen (als vorige woonplaats staat Arkel vermeld) en op 20-7-1918 vertrekt hij weer naar Arkel. Hij heeft 6 leerjaren Openbare Lagere School doorlopen en ging tot zijn 13e jaar geregeld naar school. Hij was in goede gezondheid, zonder lichaamsgebreken. Over zijn karakter: "Het kind heeft een eenigszins gesloten karakter en is niet vrij van stijfhoofdigheid. Er is echter niet gebleken dat hij onoprecht, oneerlijk of onzedelijk is."
Van zijn ouders wordt nog vermeld dat zij zorgdragend waren, vooral de moeder. Vader was niet vrij van misbruik van sterken drank. Vader was koopman in aardappelen en koster. De verpleegkosten van opa (f 150,- per jaar) worden voor 1/3 door de diaconie der Ned.Herv. Gemeente te Drongelen betaald en voor 2/3 door de burgerlijke gemeente Drongelen.Opa heeft in het weeshuis het ambacht van landbouwer geleerd. Erg honkvast was hij niet. Hij had er een hekel aan als anderen zeiden wat hij moest doen. Via allerlei omzwervingen, o.a. naar familie in de Haarlemmermeer e.o. komt hij in Arkel terecht.Waarschijnlijk omdat Hugo Bel, die oorspronkelijk uit Kedichem kwam, zich daar weer gevestigd had. (Hugo Bel was de opa van Gijsbert van de Leeden, zijn zoon Pieter heeft jaren in een boerderij op Rietveld, vlakbij Kedichem, gewoond.) Als zijn eerste vrouw, Neeltje van Houwelingen, overlijdt blijft hij achter met mijn oom Anton. Kort daarna trouwt hij met een nicht van Neeltje, mijn oma Teuntje Cornelia Blij. Het wordt een gelukkig huwelijk van bijna 55 jaar. De grootste tijd daarvan wonen ze in een oud huisje aan de Rietveldsedijk nr 5 te Arkel. Aanvankelijk hadden zij slechts de helft van dit huisje, later kregen ze ook de andere helft erbij. Ik heb aan dat huisje leuke herinneringen. Het sanitair bestond uit 1 koude kraan in de keuken en een ouderwetse plee buiten in zo'n groen hokje, met een deksel en een beerput. In 1973 krijgen opa en oma een auto-ongeluk. Ze werden door buurman Albert Marskamp naar het station gebracht toen ze tegen een boom reden. Opa breekt zijn been, oma haar arm en samen kwamen ze in het Beatrixziekenhuis in Gorinchem te liggen. Opa was niet bepaald een gemakkelijke patient. Hij kon zo hard praten in zijn slaap dat hij, teneinde de andere patienten nog wat nachtrust te gunnen, soms maar even in het washok werd gereden. Toen hij ontslagen werd had hij van elke verpleegster precies opgeschreven wat hij er van vond. (Bijv: "Dat is er één met haar op d'r tanden"). Een ander voorbeeld van het feit dat hij geen blad voor de mond nam (of juist wel) was toen hij bezoek had van een ouderling. Toen hij hem, na wat gepraat over koetjes en kalfjes, vroeg hoe het met zijn geestelijk leven was gesteld, sprak hij : "Daar heb jij geen bliksem mee te maken!"
In 1981 verhuizen opa en oma naar De Peperhof in Arkel. Opa had leukemie en het was niet langer te doen om in het primitieve huisje zonder gas, telefoon en fatsoenlijk sanitair te blijven wonen. Voor opa hoefde het niet. Toen hij binnenkwam in zijn nieuwe huis zei hij: "Zeg me eerst eens waar ik vannacht moet slapen, want ik weet hier heel geen weg".
Met zijn gezondheid ging het langzaamaan bergafwaarts. Regelmatig moest er bloed geprikt worden en als het niveau onder de 30 was, dan moest hij naar het ziekenhuis voor nieuw bloed. Eigenlijk moest hij dan een nacht overblijven, maar daar wilde opa niets van weten! En zo kreeg hij het voor mekaar dat er soms wel 2 of 3 zakken bloed tegelijk ingingen (waarbij hij stiekum soms het kraantje wat verder opendraaide, want het ging hem veel te langzaam) en dezelfde avond nog naar huis kon. Toen hij in augustus 1982 weer naar het ziekenhuis moest, was deze speciale regeling echter niet meer mogelijk. Hij is daar overleden op vrijdagavond 3 september, een aantal uur nadat ik hem voor het laatst had bezocht.
