'LEPEJOU CUI ET NOMEN APOLLONATUS IN INSULA CELEBES OBIT 23 JULY 1828'
‘Lepejou, die ook Apollo wordt genoemd, is geboren op het eiland Celebes en is gestorven op 23 juli 1828’.
Deze latijnse tekst staat te lezen op de steen van een graf dat verscholen is in het bos van huize Arnichem. Op een tweede steen staat een Arabische tekst (‘De heer heeft zijn trouwste dienstknecht dit graf gewijd, omdat hij hem dankbaar is en altijd aan hem denkt’). De Arabische tekst wijst er op dat Lepejou waarschijnlijk geen neger was maar een Islamiet uit het voormalige Nederlands-Indië.
Lepejou zou de zoon zijn van August en Jeanette, twee negers uit het voormalige Brits-Guyana. Hij zou het leven hebben gered van zijn meester Joan Hendrik Tobias, een Zwolse patriciër en toenmalige bewoner van huize Arnichem. Mogelijk is Lepejou als slavenkind verkocht in Zuid-Amerika en als dank door Tobias Lepejou naar Nederland meegenomen toen hij enige tijd als ambtenaar in Nederlands-Indië heeft gewerkt.
De leeftijd waarop Lepejou overleden is blijft een raadsel. In het gemeentearchief staat dat hij 33 jaar geworden is, anderen beweren slechts 16 of 23 jaar. Of Lepejou er nog begraven ligt is ook onduidelijk. In 1979 werd het graf helaas door vandalen beschadigd waarbij de grafstenen braken, het graf is waarschijnlijk niet geopend. Overigens is het grafje in juni 2005 op de Gemeentelijke Monumentenlijst van Zwolle geplaatst.
