In the marriage record of Margaretha and Jakob Haag, Jakob's occupationwas listed as weaver. Farmers made their living as weavers during thewinter months.
Jakob and his brothers Phillip and Michael came to America with theirfamilies in 1839. Jacob and Margaretha and Michael and Eve settled inWaldo Township. Phillip and Christina (Evangelina) settled in RichlandTownship. Philip later moved to Pleasant Township. This informationis available in the 1850 Ohio Census.
ABOUT WALDO TOWNSHIP, MARION COUNTY, OHIO
When Morrow County, Ohio was formed in 1848 that part of the county nowlying south of the Grenville Treaty Line was detached from DelawareCounty. The portion of Waldo township thus aquired by Marion County isthe oldest settled portion of Marion County.
At first the Waldo township included only that part of the townshipsouth of the Grenville Treaty Line. In June, 1848, on petition of thecitizens of the township, that portion to the north of the treaty linewas detached from Pleasant Township by the commissioners and added toWaldo Township (see township drawing). Waldo Township was MarboroughTownship, Delaware County before it became part of Marion County.
There was a German Methodist Episcopal Church in Waldo Township. TheWaldo United Methodist Church was formed in 1834. They first met in aprivate home. The first church building was constructed in 1838.
The brothers moved Sheboygan County, Wisconsin in 1853. Jakob settledin Town Sherman. Phillip settled in Town Scott. Michael settled inCalumet County, Wisconsin.
The Haag, Hirsch, and Emley families (all related through Haagmarriages) moved from Marion County, Ohio to Wisconsin at or around thesame time. Mary (Anna Maria) Haag, Jakob & Phillip's cousin, wasmarried to Frederick Emley in Ohio.
The Haags were members of the German Methodist Evanglical Church inFillmore, Washington County, Wisconsin. This is often referred to asthe Rock River Congregation.
