Burgemeester Tjaard Gerlacius en zijn vrouw Beerta Alting lieten in 1665 Adam Camerarius hun schoorsteen in het huis aan de Poelestraat 29 te Groningen kleurrijk beschilderen. Vermoedelijk stond de schoorsteen in de zaal, die in 1912 gesloopt werd om een nieuwe achterbouw mogelijk te maken.
Boven de stookopening zijn de wapens van Tjaard Gerlacius en Beerta Alting aangebracht, die het huis tussen 1656 en 1675 bewoonde. Op het schilderij staan de kinderen Anthonius, Clara, Bernardus en Wibbina afgebeeld.
Dit soort familie schilderijen waren ook een status symbool in deze tijd, naast het afbeelden van de familie zit er ook veel symboliek in. Zo is op dit schilderij een hond te zien, dit staat voor trouw. Op de hand van de oudste zoon is een buizerd afgebeeld; dit staat symbool voor scherpte en doortastendheid, maar ook voor het ontwikkelen van een nieuwe visie. Door deze symbolen werd een beeld van de familie geschetst die vooral trots te noemen is.
