Gerard Fleischeuer was een felle tegenstander van het nazidom vanaf de opkomst in Duitsland en Nederland Zo werd hij in januari 1943 benaderd door rector Voesten uit Heerlen van de Landelijke hulp voor Onderduikers (L.O.) of zijn gezin onderduikers wilde onderbrengen. Ondanks hun vijf kinderen werden op 15 februari 1943 tien Joodse onderduikers bij hen ondergebracht. Acht namen van hen zijn nog bekend en wel:
Het echtpaar Max Wolff met dochter Diny uit Sittard, Nannia de Keizer uit Utrecht, mevr. Goedhart met dochter Yvonne uit Roermond, de heer Schepp met dochter Emma uit Maastricht en een moeder met haar driejarig zoontje. De onderduikers verbleven op de bovenste verdieping.
Het ging tien maanden goed, totdat de zaak werd verraden door infiltratie van collaborateurs in de verzetsgroep. Fleischeuer werd door de Sicherheitspolizei (SiPo) gearresteerd.
Twee dagen na zijn arrestatie op 18 november 1943 liet de NSB-burgemeester van Oirsbeek Willem Henkens (uit Den Haag) de NSB-commissaris van de Provincie Limburg, graaf Max. de Marchant et d’Ansembourg uit Amstenrade, per brief weten dat Gerard Fleischeuer in de avonduren van 16 november 1943 was gearresteerd. Gerard werd op transport gesteld naar de beruchte strafgevangenis in Scheveningen (Oranje Hotel). De tien onderduikers werden op 17 november afgevoerd naar Westerbork en van daaruit naar Duitse vernietigingskampen.
Gerard Fleischeuer kwam zonder vorm van proces rond Kerstmis 1943 terecht in het concentratiekamp Vught en eind mei 1944 werd hij tezamen met honderden landgenoten op transport gesteld naar Dachau bij München, het oudste concentratiekamp van de Nazi’s.
Door zijn ervaring als ambtenaar en organisatietalent zou hij enige tijd in de kampadministratie gewerkt hebben. Later kwam hij terecht in het buitenkamp “Aussenlager” Allach bij Dachau waar hij tewerk werd gesteld in de fabriek van de Bayerische Motor Werke AG (BMW), die voornamelijk vliegtuigmotoren produceerde.
Na bijna anderhalf jaar gevangenschap en dwangarbeid in diverse kampen overleed de 56-jarige Gerard Fleischeuer op Witte Donderdag 29 maart 1945 als “Insasse des K.Z. Lagers Dachau unter Häftlings Nr. 69035". Dit, terwijl het Amerikaanse leger met zijn bevrijdende opmars bezig was. Zo bevrijdde de 45e Infanterie Divisie van het 7e Amerikaanse leger op 29 april 1945, exact een maand na het overlijden van Fleischeuer, kamp Dachau.
Als eerbetoon aan Gerard Fleischeuer werd de Midden-Limburgse Bond van Geweerdragende Schutterijen, gevestigd te Amstenrade, tijdens een vergadering op zondag 1 juli 1945 te Oirsbeek omgedoopt tot Schuttersbond Sint Gerardus Amstenrade. Hij was immers de eerste bondsvoorzitter. Ook de gemeente Oirsbeek liet zich niet onbetuigd en in 1986 werd een straatnaam naar hem vernoemd. Aan Gerard Fleischeuer werd postuum op 30 maart 1982 door burgemeester Frans Loefen, “Het Verzetsherdenkingskruis” uitgereikt, dit volgens een Koninklijk Besluit van 29 december 1980.
Op zondag 11 november 1990 kregen Gerard en zijn vrouw Philomèna Bettonville (postuum), als dapper echtpaar de hoge Israëlische Yad Vashem-onderscheiding uitgereikt. Dat vond plaats in de hoofdsynagoge van Maastricht door de culturele attaché van de Israëlische ambassade.
