Notes about Gerrit BICKER

Bicker, naam van een Amsterdamse regentenfamilie, die sedert 1578 een heersende rol speelde in het bestuur van de stad.


Gerrit Bicker., Andries' vader, had in den toen nog ongescheiden koopmans- en regentenstand zelfs een aanzienlijke plaats bekleed. Deze behoorde in 1594 tot de oprichters van de Compagnie van Verre en werd in 1602 een der bewindhebbers van de toen opgerichte Oost-Indische Compagnie. Kort voor zijn dood maakte hij deel uit van een consortium van 17 voorname kooplieden, dat zich den handel op de Witte Zee ten doel stelde. Met recht heeft men daarom Gerrit B. een der stichters van den nederlandschen wereldhandel genoemd. Tegelijk bekleedde hij politieke functies in de koopmansrepubliek. Hij was raad van 1590 tot zijn dood in 1604, was schepen en burgemeester en bekleedde bovendien nog verscheidene min of meer belangrijke ambten in de stadsregeering.
