Notes about Cornelis HASSELAER

Cornelis HASSELAER, heer van de beide Eemnessen, geb. 16 Febr. 1676, overl. te Amsterdam 18 Nov. 1737 (volgens de Haan, Priangan IV, 133 zou hij in 1732 op Batavia overl. zijn). Hij ging in dienst der O.I.C. naar Indië, waar hij al spoedig de aanstelling ontving tot shahbandar te Malakka. Door zijn eerste huwelijk verwant aan, en sterk geprotegeerd door den G.-G. Abr. van Riebeeck, werd hij bij res. 15 Oct. 1709 benoemd tot shahbandar en licentmeester te Batavia, welke betrekkingen sedert 1671 vereenigd waren. Het was een uiterst lucratief ambt en steeds zeer gewild. Niettegenstaande zijn weinige bekwaamheden bracht hij het tot lid van den Raad van Indië (Juni 1717) en zelfs tot directeur - generaal van den handel. In 1720 werd hij als regeeringscommissaris naar Ambon
gezonden tot onderzoek van de redenen der ontevredenheid over den gouverneur aldaar. Toen Heeren XVII als gevolg van hun klacht over het algemeen ‘verval in den godsdienst en de justitie’, plotseling den landvoogd Diederik Durven (1729-32), benevens twee leden van den Raad van Indië en nog eenige hoogere en lagere dienaren ‘buiten dienst en gage’ naar patria opontboden, behoorde ook hij tot degenen, die als afschrikwekkend voorbeeld moesten dienen.
Hij huwde in 1706 Antonia Leydecker, dochter van Ds. Melchior L. en van Antonia van Riebeeck, zuster van den G.-G. v. R. en dochter van Jan en van Maria de la Queillerie. Na haar overlijden hertrouwde hij in 1715 met Geertruida Constantia Clement, die hem een zoon Pieter Cornelis schonk. Zij kan een dochter geweest zijn van den predikant Antonius Clement (zie dl. I, kol. 607)
