Notes about Fabrice de la BASSECOURT

Fabrice de la BASSECOURT, geb. 21 Sept. 1578 te Mons, uit het huwelijk van Jean de la Bassecourt en Jacqueline Soudan, gest. 29 Apr. 1650 te Amsterdam. In 1600 werd hij pastoor bij de parochie van St. Germain te Orléans. 1603 zwoer hij 't katholicisme af en gaf daarvan rekenschap in: Declaration de Fabrice de la Bassecourt .... cy-devant prestre et curé ... et bachelier formé en théologie de l'église Romaine, par laquelle il expose les raisons qui l'ont meu à quitter la religion Romaine ... Adressée à ses auditeurs et paroissiens de la paroisse de Sainct Germain d' Orléans (Saumur 1603), in hollandsche vertaling verschenen als: Vele ende gewichtighe redenen .... die hem beweecht hebben het Pausdom te verlaten (1618). Kort daarop keerde hij echter weer, ‘tegen 't getuyggenisse van syne Conscientie’, ‘vervoert door vreese ende wereltsche insichten’, tot de R.K. Kerk terug. Maar niet voor langen tijd. Na eenige omzwervingen in de Nederlanden en een bezoek aan de universiteit van Leuven te Sedan gekomen, verliet hij haar in 1606 weer ten tweeden male; en nu voor goed. Ook ditmaal publiceerde hij zijn motieven daarvoor; welke publicatie echter verloren schijnt. Niet lang daarna werd hij predikant, n.l. in 1607.
Eerst stond hij toen te Metz, terwijl hij van daaruit tevens werkte in de dorpen Rauwiller, Goerlingen en Kerprich aux Bois, die hij - niettegenstaande ze onder het gebied van een lutherschen vorst lagen - bij de Gereformeerde belijdenis wist te bewaren. In 1609 hield hij een dispuut over het Avondmaal, waarvan het protocol ook schijnt uitgegeven te zijn. Het volgend jaar stichtte hij een kerk te Ludweiler; eveneens een te Mülheim en in 1645 ook een te Naarden. Vervolgens stond hij te Kleef. En sedert 9 Mei 1617 tot 1649 - toen hij zijn emeritaat kreeg - te Amsterdam, als Waalsch predikant.
