Note: Source - Charles Silas Hatcher. Will written 12/8/1823. Elijah's will proved 1/4/1830, FranklinCo, VA. He was the father of 11 children, the oldest of whom was Edmund.
From Jim Scofield. Elijah names his wife, Nancy Hatcher, in his will and in sequence 10 of his children: Edmond, James, William, Elizabeth Ferguson, John, Elijah, Sally, Jeremiah, Edward, and Gemima. Ward Hatcher is named separately as son who had already had his share of land.
There are transcripts of the deed from Elijah to Ward Hatcher for $200 for 50 acres on the Staunton River 11/14/1823. Then Ward sells the 50 acres then bounded by David Thurman, John Smith, John Hatcher, and Elijah Hatcher 10/21/1826. In December 1823, Ward presumably had not paid the $200 to his father as Elijah's will gives that Ward had his share of land already.
By the records on the estate of Richard Hail, Elijah was the husband of Sarah Hail in at least the period November 1783 through Dec 1799. With bonds signed 12/6/1813 in BedfordCo, VA Elijah married Nancy Ferguson, bn 1780. She was the dau of Jeremiah and Jemima Phelps Ferguson. In 1850, Nancy was living alone in FranklinCo, VA.
From the Marvin R Raney collection comes the detailed info on the children.
From Jim Scofield in an email msg 12/5/1997: Roger Rigney dug up the tombstone of Elijah Hatcher, son of Edward, in a cemetery located in FranklinCo, VA, about 35 miles southeast of Roanoke, and abt 2 1/2 miles east-southeast from the town of Scruggs on a ridge that is now a peninsula in Smith Mountain Lake separating the Roanoke and Blackwater water courses. The tombstone states Elijah died 12/10/1829 age 67 years. He was the 1st buried in the cemetery, and seems to be the only Hatcher buried there. Other surnames in this cemetery are Hodges, Brown, Bates, McBride, English, Ferguson, Williams, and Delancey.
