Catherine, whose married name was Gabriel, was the first child born to Fletcher and Mary Fai rchild, She was a graduate of Teacher's College at Flagstaff. She taught the Navajo childre n there in Spanish. She taught for six years at Wheeler Grade School in Wheeler, Ore. Befor e moving to Portland. She was teaching school when she met her husband Virley who worked fo r the railroad. She thought he was the handsomest man she ever met. He died in a railroad acc ident in 1941 and she was left to raise her large family alone. She was the mother of 15, gra ndmother of 52, great grandmother of 63, and great great grandmother of several. She spanne d five generations when she died at 96 years old on Nov. 10, 1986.
