Fletcher Jr. loved machines. When the automobile arrived, he became a driver for tourists a t the grand Canyon, and an expert mechanic. He served in world war 1 as a mechanic he kept th eir old Hispano Suiza and Liberty Engines running he was assigned to the Aero Squadron. (Flet cher Jr. was away in the war when Anna passed away.) Eventually he gravitated to Long Beach , California, where he was employed by the city. A self-taught mechanical engineer, he an d a colleague made some valuable inventions which enabled pumps to handle the glop from the m ud pits of oil wells, and other difficult materials that tended to clog the storm sewers duri ng the torrential rains which are an occasional component of that dry climate.He married Iv a Van Deren on June 25, 1919, After he returned from the war.
