Gerard was één van de verbouwers van het castrum Ninove uit het einde van de 5de eeuw, die aan deze verdediging het uitzicht gaf van een ware burcht, die strategisch gelegen was tussen de twee Denderarmen langs de overzijde van de stad Ninove. Deze verdediging moet gezien worden binnen de versterkingen van de toenmalige grens met Brabant.

De dood van Gisela gaf in 1137 aanleiding door Gerard I van Ninove tot de hervorming van het kleine kapittel tot een premonstratenzerabdij[45]. Deze nieuwe abdij verwierf het bestaande patrimonium van de parochiekerk en het bestaande kapittel, maar dit was onvoldoende om deze grotere communauteit in stand te houden. Om die reden schonk de stichter gronden die gelegen waren tussen Herlinkhove en Okegem om deze fundatie in stand te kunnen houden
