First Burgess from Northumberland County (Henning's Statutes, Vol.I, p.299.) ...At his death, Anne and John, Jr., were left to the guardianship of the wife of Nicholas Spencer...Coan Hall is where the first whiteman to settle in the Northern Neck, Col. John Mottram, established his seat (Eubank:The Authentic Guidebook of Historic Northern Neck of VA, pps. 72-74)...Col Mottran settled here about 1640, coming from York County but prior to that from Maryland. He patented the estate there on 19 Oct 1653 and had patented a tract on the Pyankatank River on 20 July 1642...Col. Mottram was a staunch Protestant and a Cavalier. His settlement became the headquarters for disaffected St. Mary's MD protestants. He was a justice, holding court at Coan Hall. (Eubank)...When the territory of Chickawane became the County of Northumberland, Coan Hall was the County Seat...Col. Mottram built the first wharf and warehouse and his son-in-law, Richard Wright, completed the brew house he had planned. Col. Mottram died in 1655 at the age of 45.
