John Mottram, established his seat (Eubank:The Authentic Guidebook of Historic Northern Neck of VA, pps. 72-74)...Col Mottran settled here about 1640, coming from York County but prior to that from Maryland. He patented the estate there on 19 Oct 1653 and had patented a tract on the Pyankatank River on 20 July 1642...Col. Mottram was a staunch Protestant and a Cavalier. His settlement became the headquarters for disaffected St. Mary's MD protestants. He was a justice, holding court at Coan Hall.
