Notes about Nicholas Girlington

[Doc Johnson]

He was grandson and co-heir, with his 1st cousin, John Newcomen, of John Grenefeld of Barnbow in 1542.  Nicholas was age 21 at his grandfather's death in 1541.

1548/9 Filed suit against Thomas Hardcastle and William Taylor in Barwick-in-Elmet Parish, Yorkshire regrading their trespass on the lands he inherited from his grandfather, John Grenefeld

In the same year, after the suit was decided in his favor, he sold his half of the Grenefeld estate at Barnbow to his cousin, John Newcomen. Later, in 1569, John sold the entire Barnbow estate to his brother-in-law, Richard Gascoigne (brother of John's wife, Alice).

Nicholas became Lord of Normanby following the death of his father in 1552.

At age 36 in 1556, he sold the manor of Normanby and the estates along with the advowson of the church of Scalby, Yorkshire.  He then moved back near Burnby, to Burton Stather, where it is thought he remained until his death. ; He had died by 1565.

Some researchers show Nicholas as the son of Anne Portington. However, if that were true, he would not have been co-heir to John Grenfeld's estate, as he would not have been considered his blood relative and grandson.  The entire estate would have gone to John Newcomen.

The mis-satement has been traced to The Pedigrees of Lincolnshire, vol II.  On page 404, it does in fact show Nicholas, the elder, as being first married to Anne Portington, daughter of Thomas Portington. However, on page 405, it also shows William, his brother, as being married to to the same Anne Portington, daughter of Thomas Portington and she is giving birth to William's children at the same time she is supposed to be married to Nicholas, the elder. ; Page 405 is correct, page 404 is not.
This is merely a case of an error missed by an editor of an old manuscript and then was further porpigated by other reference materials that relied on and stated the same source.
