Notes about John Grenefeld of Barnbow

[Doc Johnson]

Joh Grenefeld must have been quite aged when he died as his father had been dead for just over 76 years, his older brother for 54 years, and, his grandsons, John Newcomen and Nicholas Girlington, were already 24 and 21 respectively.  As well, he had outlived his wife and two daughters.

At the Inqusition Post Mortem held in 30 Sep 1541, his total estate holdings were as follows:

The manor or capital messuage of Barbow with three messuages, two cottages, forty acres of land and eighteen closes of meadow.  This portion was held in homage and fealty to the Honor of Pontefract Castle.

Also in Barbow, five messuages, forty acres of land and eight acres of meadow and pasture held in homage and fealty to Sir William Gascoing, Knight.

There were also lands in Tickhill, Altofts, Swineflteet and Hillam.

The lands were equally divided between his two co-heirs, John Newcomen and Nicholas Girlington.
