"Harold Richard One of Most Versatile Musicians on Air"
Ex- Newarker, a Singer, Plays "Sax," Piano, Clarinet, Flute.
Listeners who tune in the "Baron Munchausen" broadcast on WEAF Wednesday nights probably do not know that the male vocalist feature on the program is a former Newarker. The name of Harold Richard might not be recalled, either, but that is the way the singer is listed by the national Broadcasting Company. Harold Richard is only part of his name- his microphone name to be exact- his full name being Harold Richard Van Emburgh, a young man who during the World War assisted soldiers and sailors at the Newark Y.M.C.A. and is his early days attended Newark schools.
A short time ago Van Emburgh was known as the singer of romantic ballads over WABC in a Friday night broadcast. ; It was probably no known at the time that when he stepped away from the microphone he returned to his saxophone in Zoel Parenteau's Band.
Handsome Harold, who is one of radio's tallest entertainers- stands 6 feet 2 ¼ inches in his stocking feet- could substitute for a pianist if necessary, and also plays the clarinet and flute.
Still under 30, Van Emburgh has been studying various musical instruments since 1920, when he decided to follow a musical career and took up vocal study.
Father Sang Here.
Van Emburgh's ability as a singer is inherited from his father, who started as a child soprano in a Newark church choir. He followed his father's footsteps for four years, although his real ambition in life in those days was to become a doctor.
As a lad under 20 he helped to pay expenses while attending school in this city by caring for soldiers at the Newark Y.M.C.A. during the World war. For this he obtained $3 weekly and board. He delivered newspapers and sold pretzels on Newark streets in odd moments. He was still able to join his schoolmates in athletics. He was an expert at basketball and hurdling and won many honors in these classics.
When he was 17 Van Emburgh joined the 113th Infantry of the New Jersey National Guard and became an instrumentalist.
He took the next step in his professional career by making a vaudeville tour throughout the South and East. At one time he worked with Enoch Light at Johns Hopkins University and also was associated with Vincent Lopez; the orchestras of B.A. Rolfe and Frede Grofe. His one theatrical appearance was in the Shubert revue called "A Night in Spain"
Radio Debut Here.
Van Emburgh made his radio debut over a Newark station in 1925 and sang for metropolitan audiences on WOR and other stations before joining the Columbia Broadcasting's orchestra list in December, 1933. At that time he sang with Parenteau as a featured soloist of WABC. At present he has a commercial spot on the Columbia network every Friday night.
While no longer a resident of New Jersey, Van Emburgh lives with his wife and 3 year old daughter, Florence Elizabeth in Long Island City. He spends his free time motoring through the country with his family and frequently crosses the Hudson to recall old memory spots in New Jersey's woodland. He likes to play ping pong and handball. He makes "swell" pancakes and waffles and will eat anything his wife cooks for him, as well as Chinese, Italian or Jewish dishes.
He says he's never had enough tennis, traveling, handball and swimming. He has wavy brown hair, brown eyes, a genial smile and a generally romantic appearance.
