He is married to Eliza Morgan.
They got married on January 5, 1832 at St. Thomas Church, Elgin County, Ontario, he was 28 years old.
Child(ren):
Jesse Kipp was a quaker. His wife Eliza was a Methodist, and their children were raised Methodist. - Scott Aaron
Verification that Jesse's parents were John Kipp and Ruth Carpenter:
"The Kip Family in America" notes that John Kipp and Ruth Carpenter (both born in NY, as Jesse's parents are listed in Michigan census's) had a child named Jesse, and given the birthdates of John (1775) and Ruth (1776), this matches up well with Jesse being born in 1804. The book also notes that John and Ruth moved to Canada. Jesse spent the majority of his life in Sparta/Yarmouth, Ontario, though he was born in NY. By following quaker records, we learn that John & Ruth relocated to Yarmouth, Ontario in 1817 with their children (including Jesse). - Scott Aaron
"Quaker Census of 1828" lists John, Ruth, Jesse, and Zipporah Kipp attending from Oxford (which covered the Yarmouth area):
Quaker Census of 1828, Members of the NY Meeting at the time of Separation (edited by Loren Fay):
Kipp,
--John
--Ruth
--Jesse
--Zipporah
all in the Norwich MM, Oxford Co Ontario . They voted to go with the Hicksites.
The names of several of John and Ruth's other children (according to "The Kip Family in America") also appear in various documents from the Yarmouth/Sparta area: Lydia, Hiram, Harry, Maria, William, Zipporah, Caleb and Joseph. - Scott Aaron
UPDATE (12/2001): Spoke with Anne Toohey (Library of Congress) who is a descendant of Caleb Kipp, the brother of Jesse. Anne verified that Caleb and Jesse from Yarmouth/Sparta, are the children of John Kipp and Ruth Carpenter. Anne has even made a trip to Sparta and photo'd John Kipp's house. Caleb's middle name was Carpenter (his mother's maiden name). - Scott Aaron
Jesse Kipp was the witness at the wedding of Caleb Kipp and Phebe Mills on May 8, 1834 in Yarmouth.
"The Quaker Settlement in Yarmouth Township, Elgin County, Ontario" by Karen-Lynn Stafford, 1987, University of Western Ontario, 156 p.
The author reports that at the Norwich Monthly Meeting held 14 Oct 1829 proceedings of disownment were taken against several women of the Yarmouth Preparatory Meeting (Yarmouth had gone to the Hicksites in the 1828 split within the Quaker faith). Among the disowned were "Ruth Kipp, wife of John". This places Ruth Kipp in Yarmouth. - Scott Aaron
Caleb Kipp who was the son of John Kipp and Ruth (Carpenter) Kipp lived in Sparta, and was eventually banished from Canada for his part in the 1837 Rebellion. Caleb's middle name was Carpenter, clearly either carrying his mothers maiden name or being named after Ruth's father, Caleb Carpenter. - Scott Aaron
Jesse Kipp, Yeoman married by Rev Mark Burnham Jan 5 1832 to Eliza Morgan, spinster, both of Yarmouth, by publication. Witnesses were: David Harvey, James Brown, John Morgan (from St Thomas Church Reg #1, pg 217)
"The certificate came to Pelham MM, recorded 22-08-1817 from Creek MM - (Crum Elbow Prep. Mtg.) This is in Box 22 under files 10-12 for Pelham -- which holds "loose" documents. They went straight to Yarmouth (later Sparta, I believe, and Pelham was the MM with oversight for that still). Norwich MM set off in 1819 as more Friends arrived in the area and could support a mtg to stand on its own. Certificate for: John and Ruth Kipp, with children: Jesse, Maria, Caleb, Joseph, Zipporah, and William (I presume in order of age). Reuben and Sarah Haight from the same area on the Hudson had list of children in birth order. I know from other records that substantiate that." - Jane Zavitz-Bond
A "not so flattering" story about Jesse from the book "Old Sparta" by Charles S. Buck:
"Squire Jesse Kipp came into town one day, wearing his plug hat and accompanied by a large Newfoundland dog. He stopped at the Elgin House to get a drink but when he went away he forgot his dog, which was dozing in another room. The squire returned to get another drink and then went home. Someone, seeing him depart and the dog asleep, tied a can to the dog's tail and sent him towards his master. Kipp was walking up the road a bit unsteadily but still sedately when his dog dashed between his legs, upset him in the mud and sent the plug hat flying into the ditch."
