Child(ren):
The Van Norman family genealogists have concluded that Joseph Van Norman, born in Smithfield, PA, in 1741, was the son of Samuel Van Namen and his first wife Sarah de la Montagne. The Walpack, Machchemeck, Minisink, and Smithfield RDC records together make that identification almost certain. There are no baptismal records for Joseph Van Norman, nor his sister Elizabeth, nor his brother Isaac, but there are records for some of their children.
This was pioneer country on the edge of Indian territory. Pastors arrived for short periods of time, some Dutch, some German, some almost illiterate. Baptisms were sporadic. Fighting, not only with the Indians but also with the Connecticut settlers in the Pennamite Wars, made orderly life difficult. Consistent spelling was not an important value for the pastors who served these Delaware River churches and surnames were still not standardized. ; The same individuals are found with several different spellings of the Van Naamen surname: Van Arnom, Van Arnum, Van Namen, Van Orman, Vannorman, and Van Norman.
