Gerhard Flamens war Graf im Niederrheingebiet in der Beluwe, sein Bruder Rütger Graf im Gebiet von Kleve. Er erbte wichtige Rechtspositionen in Westfalen von den sächsischen BILLUNGERN und besaß Lehen von Bischöfen und vom Kaiser.
