Enlisted on November 12, 1864. Member of Company B 61st Illinois Regiment under Captain Mann. Fought in Civil War. When Lincoln freed the slaves, the company threatened to lay down their arms. They were fighting to save the union, not free the slaves. Another brother served with him in the Union army. Many of the family were known as 'copperheads' because they were southern sympathizers.
