Notes about Francis Marion Ward

Enlisted on November 12, 1864. Member of Company B 61st Illinois Regiment under Captain Mann.  Fought in Civil War.  When Lincoln freed the slaves, the company threatened to lay down their arms.  They were fighting to save the union, not free the slaves.    Another brother served with him in the Union army.   Many of the family were known as 'copperheads' because they were southern sympathizers.  Uncle Frank was living in Sulphur Springs, Missouri in 1931 when Russell Ballard talked with him about the family in 1931.   --From "History of the Ballard Family" 1996 by  Russell Ward Ballard
