    EARLDOM of ANGUS (XVI, 3) 1361

    Margaret Stewart, suo jure Countess of Angus, eldest sister andheir ofthe line. She m. betw een 1361 and 1374, as his 2nd wife,Thomas, 13th(sic. 9th) Earl of Mar, the last Earl of Ma r in thedirect male line, whodsp. 1377. Probably in her husband'slifetime, but certainly v eryshortly afterwards, she becamemother of a son known as George Douglas,begotten by her lat ehusband's brother-in-law, William Douglas, 1st Earlof Douglas,whose wife Margaet, suo jur e Countess of Mar (being sisterandheir of Thomas, 13th Earl of Mar abovenamed), was then ali ve,andoutlived her husband. On 9 Apr 1389 the Countess of Angusresigned theEarldom (reserv ing for herself the frank tenementthereof for life) infavour of the said George Douglas, no thowever, then styling him her sonor alleging any relationship tohim; though in his marriag e contract withthe King's daughter,some eight years afterwards, she styles him "Lord ofAngus " andacknowledges him as her son. She, however, survived her saidson,and was living 1417 , being styled "Countess of Angus and Mar",(viz.Angus in her own right and Mar in right of h er longdeceased, and onlyhusband); but (of course) never styled"Countess of Douglas" as th e wifeof that Earl of Douglas (whowas the father of her children) survivedhim. She d. befor e 23Mar 1417/8. [Complete Peerage I:154]
