In 1403, Henry Duncanson granted Sir Walter a charter of two parts
of the lands of Easter Fingask. In 1406, Robert, Duke of Albany confirmed a grant made by Archibald, Earl of Doulgas of certain lands in the barony of Lintrathen. The Duke issued a charter confirming Archibald Douglas' charter on June 15, 1414. Crawford states that Walter acquired these lands when he married Isabel Durward, the heiress of Linrathen.
On November 6, 1419, Margaret Erskine, lady of Inchmartin, granted Walter a charter of the half lands of Wardropstoun in the Mearns to himself in liferent and to Walter his son by Isabel (Margaret's daughter). Walter and Isabel's sons, David, Alexander, Patrick and George are also named in the charter and in another charter issued by Margaret of the lands of Auchleven on November 20, 1419.
Walter was given a safe conduct to go to Flanders in 1424. In 1425, he was appointed High Treasurer of Scotland. From 1431 - 1437, Walter was in England as a commissioner for negotiating a truce.
On January 28, 1427, Walter founded a chaplaincy in the Church of St. Mary of Auchterhouse and endowed it with ten merks annually out of the lands of Kirkton of Esay and Keillour and another ten merks from his lands of Carcary.
In 1432, he got a license from James I to erect his Tower of Eroly or Airlie in the form of a castle, and it with the castles of Bollischen and Forthar became the chief seats of his successors.
